PARTICIPANTS

CAN WALKERS PARTICIPATE?

Absolutely! The Women's Half Marathon and 5K is for athletes of all speeds and sizes. Please note: Due to city road closure and traffic requirements, ALL participants MUST complete the half marathon within the 4 hour course time limit, and ALL 5K participants MUST complete the course within 1 hour. To finish within the course time limits  you must maintain a pace of at least 18:00 minutes per mile (or faster).

DO I HAVE TO BE PART OF A TEAM TO PARTICIPATE?

There are two ways in which you can register for The Women's Half Marathon: either as an individual or as a team member.  A Half Marathon team consists of at least 5 female participants, one of whom will also be designated as the captain. You will also need a team name. The captain registers herself first and establishes the team name (and password, if desired). Then, all other members will register themselves and chose the option to join that team. There are no registration discounts for teams. All members of the team run the full 13.1 Half Marathon course. Regardless of how many members on your team, everyone will be timed as individuals. The five fastest female times will be added together for the team score. If your team does not have at least 5 female finisher's, you will not receive a team score. All team members are also eligible for individual awards. The team option is available in the Half Marathon distance only. Awards are given for the Fastest Team and the Largest Team.

CAN MEN PARTICIPATE?

The Women's Half Marathon is open to both men & women participants, however, age group and overall awards will be given to female participants only.  We suggest that men participate only  in support of a woman or a charity. If a male is interested in participating in this event to win, get an award, or PR we would be happy to suggest some other events in the local area that would be better suited for those goals.

ARE THERE ANY AGE REQUIREMENTS TO PARTICIPATE?

You must be 12 years old prior to race day to participate in the half marathon and 8 years old to participate in the 5k.

HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER?

Volunteers are vital to the success of the event and not only are WHM volunteers a super group of people, they get in on all the behind the scenes race day action! The event will need hundreds of volunteers to staff the aid stations, work the Expo and offer support to the runners at the start and finish. For more information, including job descriptions and shift times, please visit http://womenshalfmarathon.com/stpetersburg/volunteer-womens-half-marathon-10k.html

The Women’s Half Marathon is a very spectator-friendly race. The best places to cheer on the runners are: Pioneer Park or the Base of the Pier. Pioneer Park is just a few steps from the start/finish line and the runners will pass the park 3 times during the course of the race. From the Pier, you can see the Half Marathoners going out and back on the Pier and also catch them as they return back downtown. The Pier is also just a short walk from the finishing area

THE CAUSE

WHAT IS TEAM IN TRAINING?

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Team In Training (TNT) is the world’s first, largest and best charity sports training program. Participants raise funds to help find cures for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma. In exchange, they receive personalized coaching, training clinics and the support and camaraderie of a team. Participants can choose from more than 60 accredited events in the U.S. and abroad. The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society provides airfare and accommodations to their event destinations. A key element of the TNT experience is training in honor of a local blood cancer survivor whose courage provides motivation and inspiration. To learn more about TNT or to attend an informational meeting in your area visit www.teamintraining.org or call 1.800.482.TEAM.

HOW MUCH MONEY HAS TEAM IN TRAINING RAISED OVER THE YEARS?

Since Team In Training’s inception in 1988, more than 389,000 participants have raised over $950 million to support the Society’s research and patient services programs. The 2009 Women’s Half Marathon raised $1 million for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. We hope to raise double that amount in 2010!

IS TEAM IN TRAINING TARGETED TO ANY PARTICULAR LEVEL?

People of all ages—from novices to seasoned athletes—participate in Team In Training. Novice athletes succeed in the program with the help of personalized coaching as well as a supportive and friendly team environment. Everyone participates in honor of a patient, which provides a strong motivation to succeed.

CAN I REGISTER THROUGH TNT?

Yes, please visit www.teamintraining.org for more information.

AWARDS

WHAT PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED AND IN WHAT CATEGORIES?

The Women’s Half Marathon will recognize and award the top three female runners to cross the finish line in both the half marathon and 5K. These overall winners will be determined solely by the order in which they cross the finish line, as opposed to chip times. Therefore, female runners who would like to compete for the top three spots should plan to line-up as close to the starting line as possible. This is an open race and there will not be separate start times or a designated “elite” wave.

In addition to the first, second, and third place winners, the Women’s Half Marathon and 5K will recognize the top female finishers in each age group. Chip-time will be used to establish age group winners and awards will be given in person after the race. If you are unable to attend the awards ceremony, your award will be mailed to the address on your race registration.

Each race participant is timed individually, therefore, members of half marathon teams are eligible for team, overall, and age group awards.

Teams times will be calculated by adding together the five fastest female times on each team. Awards will be given to the top three fastest teams and also to the largest team (team with the most registered members).
